Every year, CMD travel to three national university dance competitions to compete alongside representatives from universities across the country. Not only is this a brilliant opportunity to perform in front of a crowd, it’s a chance to show off hours of hard work and preparation. Most recently, CMD have attended KCL, Cardiff, and Loughborough. Each competition is so much fun to be a part of, with Loughborough being the biggest and most anticipated on the calendar with over 30 universities competing.
Of course, winning isn’t everything, but this past year, CMD have done amazingly well! At KCL: Intermediate Ballet came 2nd with ‘Overflow’, as well as ‘Unrequited’ placing 2nd in Intermediate Contemporary. Two of our amazing dancers Martina Sole and Bethany Chan won 1st place in their duet ‘Lost Everything’. Bethany also placed 1st for her solo ‘It’s Too Late’ and won the Best Girl award at KCL, and Best Dancer at Cardiff. Our proudest moment was at Cardiff when our Advanced Contemporary piece, ‘Hold Me', won 1st place and achieved a perfect score (300/300)!! Advanced Jazz ‘Tous Le Memes’ and our Acro-Contemporary piece from the Wildcard category also placed 3rd. Finally, at Loughborough, our sensational dancer Adrian Lawrence had an honorable mention. Placing at these competitions is a massive achievement for CMD as there are many Universities to compete against who are all also very talented!
There’s plenty of opportunity to take part in competitions with CMD. We enter a mixture of auditioned and un-auditioned class dances, at both Advanced and Intermediate level; not forgetting the opportunity to enter solos, duets and trios. There really is something for everyone! Auditioning for auditioned numbers is in no way scary or intimidating, and it’s easy to get involved with a class dance by attending classes each week.
Competitions will be in Term 2, meaning there’s lots of time to get to know the people you’re dancing with, and rehearse until the dance is perfect! It really is worth it, especially when you finally get to perform at a competition for the rest of the club, and everyone else to see.
CMD has had an incredibly successful year this year, and though bringing back trophies is part of that success, it’s also down to the talent and dedication of everyone involved.
Let’s hope this coming year will be just as successful as years gone by!
